A key part of our mission is
to help faculty use
service-learning as a teaching
methodology, including it
directly into the curriculum. We
do this by providing examples of
syllabi, opportunities for
training and technical
assistance, and connection to
faculty who have experience in
service learning.
The commonly asked questions we get from
faculty are:
What IS service-learning?
Service-learning is a methodology of
teaching that uses meaningful service as a
way of helping students learn the academic
material and understand the real-world
relevancy of the discipline while at the
same time meeting a real community need.
There are many other definitions of service
learning.
Read how other organizations are defining
service-learning.
How do I get started with service
learning?
Many higher education institutions in
Kentucky have resources on campus to help
you get started in service-learning. On this
website, go to Members (put link here) to
see if there is a resource at your
institution.
If your institution does not have an office
or staff person to assist faculty, please
contact KyCC for assistance. KyCC offers
workshops on service-learning for faculty,
staff, and administrators. KyCC is in the
process of developing a consultant corps in
Kentucky. The national Campus Compact has a
national Consultant Corps available.
Colleges and Universities in Kentucky and
around the country have developed materials
to help faculty in using service-learning:
Elements of Service-Learning (Berea
College)
Steps to using service-learning
(University of Kentucky)
Principles of Good Practice by Jeffery
Howard (University of Wisconsin-Madison)
Do you have examples of service learning
in my curriculum area?
If you have a Service Learning or Civic
Engagement office on campus, it probably has
a copy of AAHE’s series on Service-Learning
in the Disciplines. If your campus does not
have this resource, the KyCC library has a
complete set and loans books to KyCC
members.
Several organizations have collected
examples of service learning syllabi, some
of which are available through the links
below.

What are some of the organizations that
support service-learning?
